Argentina's World Cup Preparation is Falling Apart — and Messi Can't Afford That
The defending champions could arrive at the World Cup with almost zero preparation — and that's a massive problem
The defending champions could head into the 2026 World Cup with barely a single warmup game under their belt.
The Finalissima against Spain in Doha was supposed to anchor Argentina's March schedule — but escalating tensions in Qatar have thrown the venue into serious doubt. To make matters worse, a planned friendly against Qatar as part of the Qatar Football Festival has already been cancelled outright after the QFA suspended all competitions "until further notice."
It doesn't stop there. Friendly matches against Mexico and Honduras, set for early June in Las Vegas and Miami as final tune-ups, have also fallen through. As it stands, the Finalissima — itself still logistically uncertain — could be Argentina's only preparation match before their World Cup opener against Algeria on June 16.
For a team carrying the weight of defending champions, with Messi leading the charge one last time, arriving at a World Cup this underprepared would be a serious concern — and one that rival nations won't be losing any sleep over.
