Morocco Lose Their Captain as Saiss Announces International Retirement Before World Cup

Morocco's captain has called time on his international career — and the timing couldn't be more bittersweet.

With the World Cup just months away, Morocco must now prepare without one of their most iconic leaders.

Romain Saiss has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished 86-cap career with Morocco. The 35-year-old made the decision shortly after the Atlas Lions' AFCON final defeat to Senegal, choosing to step away at the peak of the tournament cycle.

"Wearing the colours of Morocco and becoming its captain will remain the greatest honour of my career," Saiss wrote on Instagram. "Every time I've worn it, I've felt an indescribable pride."

For Morocco, it's a significant blow ahead of a World Cup on home continent soil. Saiss has been a cornerstone of their defence for over a decade — replacing that leadership and experience won't be easy.
