Samu Faces Serious Knee Injury Scare Ahead of 2026 World Cup
A scary night in Lisbon could cost Spain one of their brightest attacking talents this summer.
FC Porto and Spain forward Samu, 21, is feared to have suffered a cruciate ligament injury to his right knee during Monday's Clásico against Sporting CP, which ended 1-1.
The young striker complained of discomfort twice in the opening 45 minutes before being withdrawn at halftime, replaced by Deniz Gul. Portuguese outlet Record reports that Porto's medical team conducted further assessments on Tuesday, though the club has yet to officially confirm the severity of the injury.
The situation is serious enough that Samu could be ruled out for the remainder of the season, with surgery remaining a possibility.
Spain's Royal Football Federation has already been notified, putting his participation in the 2026 World Cup in serious doubt. Samu was not the only casualty from the match — Jakub Kiwior and Martim Fernandes also picked up knocks and underwent additional medical evaluations on Tuesday.
