Senegal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Team Profile
Reigning African champions and 2002 quarter-finalists — Senegal arrive at their third successive World Cup with history in their sights.
The Coach: Pape Thiaw
Few coaches could carry the weight of Senegal's 2002 legacy better than Thiaw — he lived it. The former centre-forward played his part in that famous quarter-final run, memorably setting up Henri Camara's decisive goal against Sweden in the last 16. He was also part of the squad that reached the AFCON final that same year.
After retiring in 2009, Thiaw gradually worked his way into the Lions of Teranga's coaching setup, serving as assistant to Aliou Cissé before stepping up as caretaker and eventually being confirmed as permanent head coach in December 2024. He hit the ground running — extending the team's unbeaten run, securing World Cup qualification, and overseeing a eye-catching 3-1 friendly win over England in June 2025.

How They Qualified
Senegal topped CAF Group B in convincing fashion, finishing the campaign unbeaten with 22 goals scored and just three conceded. The decisive moment came with a 3-2 away win against Congo DR, before they wrapped things up with a 4-0 demolition of Mauritania on the final matchday. Sadio Mané led the scoring charts with five goals, while Pape Matar Sarr (four) and Ismaila Sarr (three) also contributed significantly.

World Cup History
2002 — The Fairy Tale
Senegal's debut at the World Cup remains one of the greatest stories the tournament has ever produced. They opened against reigning world and European champions France — and won 1-0, Papa Bouba Diop bundling home after El Hadji Diouf's cutback was initially blocked. The dance celebration that followed became iconic. "The whole country was at fever pitch," recalled one Dakar football official. "It was as if we'd won the World Cup."
They followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Denmark and a dramatic 3-3 against Uruguay to advance from the group, before Camara's extra-time goal sent Sweden home in the Round of 16. Their run was ended in the quarter-finals by a golden goal from Türkiye's Ilhan Mansiz — but it remained the furthest any African nation had gone at a World Cup until Morocco's semi-final run in 2022.
2022 — So Close Again
Arriving as reigning AFCON champions, Senegal showed plenty of quality in Qatar. After a narrow loss to the Netherlands, they beat hosts Qatar 3-1 and dramatically edged Ecuador in a winner-takes-all group decider, with captain Kalidou Koulibaly volleying home the decisive goal. Their journey ended in the Round of 16, where England proved too strong in a 3-0 defeat.
Top Scorer
Papa Bouba Diop leads the way with three World Cup goals — all scored at Korea/Japan 2002 — ahead of Henri Camara's two. Diop, who went on to play for Lens, Fulham, Portsmouth, West Ham and Birmingham among others, passed away tragically in 2020 at the age of 42 and remains one of the most beloved figures in Senegalese football history.
Most Capped at World Cups
Kalidou Koulibaly, Youssouf Sabaly and Ismaila Sarr share the record with seven appearances each, having started every game across both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Koulibaly — who skippered the side in Qatar — is the only one to have played every single minute of those seven matches.
