The England Players Who Need a Big Finish to Make Tuchel's World Cup Squad
From Pope to Watkins, these are the England players with 100 days to prove they deserve a seat on the plane to North America.
The core is set — but these players still have everything to prove before Tuchel makes his final call.
With 100 days until the World Cup kicks off, Thomas Tuchel is close to knowing his England squad. Pickford and Henderson are nailed on between the sticks, but the third goalkeeper spot is genuinely up for grabs. Nick Pope holds it for now, though his form has been unconvincing — a strong finish to the season is a must.
In defence, Maguire and Shaw have both been consistent under Carrick and bring the kind of experience a fairly young backline will need. Stay fit, keep performing, and both should be on the plane. At full-back, Lewis Hall has been impressive and looks deserving of a spot, while Alexander-Arnold needs a big end to the season — a strong Champions League run and a return to his best would go a long way. John Stones has barely featured since December and simply needs minutes and fitness to reclaim his spot.
In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo is the most compelling case — back in form at United, with tournament experience from Euro 2024 already on his CV. Gallagher made the right move joining Spurs to get minutes, but the performances haven't followed. Gibbs-White shines for Forest but faces a crowded number 10 picture at international level.
Out wide, Rashford, Saka, Gordon, Madueke, Palmer, and Eze all look set. Foden will likely travel regardless of form. Up front, Kane is the first name on the sheet. Watkins needs goals — just two in 2026 so far — to justify his inclusion, while Abraham, Calvert-Lewin, and Welbeck are long shots but could force Tuchel's hand with a prolific run-in.
The next 100 days matter. For some, this is their last real shot.
