Xavi is the Favorite of the Moroccan Federation
Current coach Walid Regragui resigned following a disappointing AFCON campaign, though his exit isn't "official" yet.
The renowned former player and subsequent head coach of Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez, could become the manager of the Morocco national team. The 46-year-old Catalan has been without a coaching role since leaving Barcelona 18 months ago. While he has been linked with several clubs during this period, he has not been in a rush to choose a new job.
According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Xavi is on the verge of taking over the Moroccan national squad ahead of their participation in the World Cup this summer. The local federation is seeking a replacement for current head coach Walid Regragui, who resigned after the team failed to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil. Although the federation has not yet officially announced the split with Regragui, talks with potential successors are already underway.
However, according to The Athletic, Xavi is more inclined to take the job after the World Cup. He reportedly believes there is currently too little time to implement his tactical ideas before the tournament begins. Morocco has been drawn into a group with Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti.
